If coding agents can now handle large-repo SWE tasks, what happens to junior engineers?
Jason•9h agoMeta just announced Muse Code beta, a terminal coding agent powered by Muse Spark 1.2.
The pitch is pretty aggressive: it can take on complete software engineering tasks across large repos — planning changes, writing code, and validating results.
The benchmark numbers also look strong, at least on the surface. Obviously vendor benchmarks should be taken with caution, but the direction is hard to ignore: coding agents are moving from “autocomplete” toward “give it a task and let it work through a repo.”
This makes me wonder what happens to software engineering roles over the next few years.
If agents can handle more implementation work, the bottleneck probably shifts from “who can write the code?” to:
- who can define the right task
- who understands the existing system
- who can review AI-generated changes
- who can validate correctness
- who can catch security / reliability issues
- who can debug when the agent confidently breaks something
- who can decide whether the change should be made at all
The part I’m most curious about is junior engineers.
A lot of junior growth used to come from small implementation tasks, bug fixes, refactors, and learning the codebase by doing relatively scoped work. But those are exactly the tasks coding agents are starting to target.
So does this make junior engineers more productive?
Or does it reduce the number of junior roles because senior engineers can now delegate more to agents instead of people?
My current guess: coding won’t disappear, but “just write code from a ticket” becomes less differentiated. The valuable skill becomes turning vague product / system goals into correct, safe, maintainable changes.

My guess is this won’t immediately replace junior engineers, but it may change what “junior-ready” means. If agents can handle basic implementation, then the new junior bar may become: can you understand the repo, write a clear spec, review the diff, add tests, and catch subtle bugs the agent missed? Ironically, that might make entry-level hiring harder, not easier.
