Grok 4.5 and Meta’s Muse Spark 1.1 both just dropped, and both seem heavily focused on coding / debugging / agentic workflows. It feels like AI coding tools are moving from “autocomplete” to something closer to “junior engineer that can execute tasks, modify code, debug, and use tools.”
That makes me wonder what happens to software engineering jobs over the next few years. I don’t think engineers disappear. But I do wonder if the shape of the job changes a lot.
Maybe companies need fewer people doing straightforward implementation work, but more people who can:
- define the right problem
- write clear specs
- review AI-generated code
- debug messy production systems
- understand legacy codebases
- evaluate correctness and security
- connect engineering decisions to product/business outcomes
The part I’m most curious about is junior roles.
If AI agents can do a lot of the “easy starter tasks,” how do new engineers get trained? Do junior SWE jobs shrink? Or do they become more like AI-assisted product / integration / debugging roles from day one?
